Our special school nursing service works term time only; however, we do support some educational provisions during the holidays when they have clubs on to support pupils have access to leisure activities. Although we are a term time service, we have our managers/nurses around in school holidays delivering training or providing nurse consultancy.
Who We Work With
ELSWe work with children and young people aged between 4years and 25years, this is across our primary and secondary school and the special educational colleges we support.
We work collaboratively with families, NHS professionals such as paediatricians, dietitians, diabetic nurse, physical, occupational therapy, physiotherapist and professionals in social care to ensure we are offering a holistic school nursing service.
What Do We Do
We undertake assessments and develop health care plans to ensure pupils can be supported in their health needs by all staff in education, we do this in congestion with parents/carers. We regularly review and update pupil health care plans to ensure that needs are regularly assessed.
Nurses based in our schools will carry out direct nursing care, we also supervise and assess our junior nursing team members if they are undertaking clinical skills by training and assessing their competencies to ensure safe clinical practice is delivered. All our competencies are child specific to the pupils we support to ensure a person-centred approach to our nursing care.
Our nursing team will also provide advice and support, make referrals and signpost to a wide range of professionals in the community.
All our schools are on individual service level agreements to meet the individual needs of schools and the specific needs of the pupils on their role.
